Number of new cases of prostate cancer in the year. Prostate cancer is a form of cancer that develops in the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system. Prostate cancer tends to develop in men over the age of fifty and although it is one of the most common types of cancer in men, many never have symptoms, undergo no therapy and eventually die of other causes. This is because prostate cancer is, in most cases, slow-growing, symptom-free and since men with the condition are older, they often die of causes unreleated to the prostate cancer. About 2/3 of cases are slow growing, with the other 1/3 more aggressive and fast growing.Cancer is a leading cause of death in the United States and Florida. Public health is concerned with threats to the health of a community based on population health analysis. By monitoring patterns of health and illness, including incidence of disease and causes of death, we are able to identify where and in what populations the disease occurs, better identify its causes and risk factors, and measure what preventive actions effectively reduce disease and death.
